Sometimes a plain concrete walk just doesn't do a property justice. It gets cracked, stained, and worn - and at some point patching it stops making sense. That's exactly where we started on this one. The old walkway was done, so we stripped it out and built something that actually fits the home.

What we ended up with is a 16x16 stepping stone path framed by a clean concrete border, filled in with river rock on both sides. The stones run straight from the gravel drive all the way up to a landing at the porch steps. It's a simple concept, but the execution is what makes it work. Every stone is set level, the border is tight, and the river rock fills clean without any gaps or thin spots.

The framed border is one of those details that separates a finished hardscape install from something that just looks thrown together. It keeps the river rock contained, gives the whole walkway a defined edge, and makes the stepping stones pop visually. Without it, you'd just have rocks scattered in the yard.

We want to be straightforward about what we do - excavation is still our primary focus here in Southern Illinois. But we've been taking on select light hardscape work like walkways and patios where it makes sense. If the scope is a good fit, we're in. This walkway is a solid example of the kind of work we're willing to put our name on.

Good hardscape doesn't have to be complicated. The right materials, a clean layout, and attention to the small stuff - that's really all it takes to go from a worn-out concrete walk to something with some actual character.
