Standing water is one of those problems that looks minor until it isn't. What starts as a muddy patch after rain turns into a soggy mess that never fully dries out - killing grass, creating ruts, and making a simple walk across your property a muddy ordeal. That's exactly what this Jefferson County, IL property was dealing with.
The low spot near the gravel drive and building had no outlet. Water would sheet in, pool up, and just sit there. It had nowhere to go. So we gave it somewhere to go. We installed catch basins to intercept the water right where it collects and ran a drainage line out to the pond on the property. Simple concept, clean execution.
The excavation side of this is where precision matters. We used our John Deere 60G mini excavator to trench the line from the catch basin locations out toward the outlet point. Getting the pitch right is everything - too flat and water stalls in the pipe, too steep and you risk erosion at the outlet. We've done enough of these to know what works.
What makes this type of drainage solution stand out is that it works with the land instead of against it. No pumps, no mechanical parts, no ongoing maintenance headaches. Just a properly graded underground pipe system that moves water away every single time it rains. The pond acts as the natural outlet, so the water ends up exactly where it belongs.
Rural properties in southern Illinois deal with drainage challenges constantly - heavy clay soils, flat terrain, and limited outlets make standing water a recurring problem for a lot of landowners. A well-designed catch basin system is one of the most cost-effective ways to fix it for good.
